Designs on America

from the new york times:

Even before yellow ribbons and “Support Our Troops” bumper stickers covered the landscape, the popular emblems of patriotism (or “patriotism”) were subject to interpretation, misinterpretation and downright co-opting. In 1971, on his first album, John Prine was moved to observe that “Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore.” Symbolism aside, what are we to make of such objects? Are they, well, good enough? No one deserves our respect more than the nation’s veterans, so it’s a pity when a desire to honor them manifests itself in something deeply unoriginal. Or cheesy. For Veterans Day, the Op-Ed page asked eight designers to rethink those pro-United States symbols and come up with something fresh.
